Electrical management oî Artillery.
Our Electrico-technical Works has from the beginning ap-
plied itself especially and constantly to the problems connected
with the electrical management of Marine and Land Artillery.
To-day we may affirm with pride that after 15 years’ pa-
tient and stedfast work we have succeeded in perfecting our
electrical contrivances in such a way as to excel all other existing
systems, electrical, hydraulic or mixed.
In the earliest electrical arrangements for turret turning,
which"were-made on a primitive system, the. ratio between the
maximum Welotity aniditne minimumy was fabotut Ito, 42!
We began with our new system on the first royal warships
and obtained a ratio of I to 90.
On the succeeding warships the ratio of velocity rose to
that of I to 150, and, at the present time the latest ship boasts
an electrical movement with a ratio of I to 300.
On the new Italian warships, which will have 15 inch guns,
to be made by our firm and handled exclusively by electricity,
we confidently reckon on reaching a ratio of I to 400 both on
the turning movement and on the elevation of the gun.
We must also add that with prolonged use our system loses
absolutely nothing of its efficiency.
The warship ’’Regina Elena” which is the oldest, still re-
tains in her turrets after 8 years’ continuous service the same
precision and the same smoothness of movement which they
had in the beginning.
No breakage has ever occurred on this warship or on the
others that followed her, so that no repairs have ever been ne-
cessary in the installations made by us.
The prejudice that existed against the electrical manage-
ment of artillery may at the present time be considered conque-
red; it is now only opposed by those makers of artillery who
do not possess the proper appliances simply because they have
not dedicated years and years to the solution of this important
problem as we have done.
System of governing the helm in a large ship by
means of two motive powers.
This system which was fitted on board the dreadnought
Giulio Cesare’’ and exhaustively tested, will by order of the
Ministry of Marine be extended to the dreadnoughts ‘Dante
Alighieri”, ’’Conte di Cavour”, ’’Leonardo da Vinci”, Duilio”
and-Doria').
It possesses.tlie/following nequisites :
I° The helmsman can manoeuvre the helm at will and at
any instant either with one means (steam engine) or the other
(electric motor) without any operation whatever. The helmsman
has therefore at his disposal two steering wheels;
2° The pointer on the dial under the helmsman’s eyes
is always in phase with the helm's real steering angle whatever
manoeuvre may have taken place;
3° By turning the two wheels together and in the same
direction the helmsman obtains on the helm a steering velocity
which is the sum of the velocities of the two methods;
4° The helmsman has always the possibility of observing
at any instant whether he has the two methods at his disposal
without the necessity of recurring to special signals, telephones,
bells, etc.;
5° Both the mechanical and electrical apparatus are of
the greatest certainty ;
6° The electrical working of the helm is extremely light.
At present we are studying an appliance for rendering the
helm government very light when working with steam.
System of governing the helm in small and medium
ships, submersibles, destroyers, etc..
This system is electrical and manual. It can be applied e-
qually to the steering helm and to the diving planes.
Its principal characteristic is that it allows the change from
electrical movement to that by hand through the same wheel
without any operation whatever.
The electrical appliance acts only as a help to the move-
ment, its object being to do away with a continuous effort on
the, part:of the helmsman. Should it fail, the helm is immedia-
tely,manageable-by, the-same-wheel butvof course, with) a grea=
ter effort by the helmsman. In other words, when the current
is on, the manoeuvre is very light (the touch ot a finger is suf-
ficient) if there be no current it is harder but always possible
and immediate.
Whatever may happen, it is impossible for the wheel to get
out of phase with the rudder bar. The safety of the system is
such that it has received the unconditional approval of the Ita-
lian Marine which has applied it to the submersibles ’’Pullino”’
and ’’Ferraris’’ and is now extending it to the submersibles
’’Pacinotti’’ and ’’Guglielmotti’’, both to the steering and diving
gear. The German Marine has adopted it on the submersible
building at the Fiat San Giorgio works at Spezia.
System of electrical management for Anchor caps-
tans, Warping capstans, Boat - lifting winches.
The system adopted by the firm of Ansaldo has shewn clear-
ly that electricity can advantageously take the place of steam
in the above connection. The electric motor thus applied com-
prises all the requisites of a steam engine without its defects.
It is possible with our systems to keep a winci at its great-
est pull for any length of time without the motor moving, simi-
larly to what occurs in a steam winch that cannot pull by reason
of an excess of resisting couple in the maximum motive couple.
This is obtained by simple means and with absolute certa-
inty of not having sparking either at the machines or at the
switches.
The speed can be regulated within wide limits and much
quicker arrests can be made than with a steam engine.
These systems have been applied to the dreadnoughts
’’Dante Alighieri”, ’’Conte di Cavour”, ’’Giulio Cesare’,
**Meonardo-da Vinci”, Duilio” and ’’Doria!’,

Small and medium ammunition hoists, fixged on the royal
Italian warships ’’ Regina Elena”, ‘’’ Vittorio Emanuele”,
Roma”, ’’Napoli’’, ’’San Giorgio”’, ’’San Marco”, ’’Dante
Alighieri”, ’’Conte di Cavour”, ’’Giulio Cesare”’, ’’Leonardo
da Vinci”, ‘Duilio’, ’’Doria’”’.

An appliance will be in use shortly for :

the Engine Room.
In course of study an arrangement for :
Sighting Guns at a distance from them.
